About

Produced over a series of in-school and off-site workshops, this exhibition by nine A-Level art students from Haverstock School, entitled Segregation, confronts the viewer with a powerful selection of works from the Zabludowicz Collection by artists Grimes, Thomas Hirschhorn, Glenn Ligon, Junebum Park, Dan Shaw-Town, and Fred Tomaselli.

The exhibition explores extremes and barriers, considering how to present and contextualise works that speak to themes of aggression, anger and violence. The exhibition’s installation reflects the concept of the show, segmenting the gallery into contrasting spaces and creating divisions which both shield and reveal. The students’ choice of work range in medium and style, with very different works placed in conversation with one another, reflecting many diverse perspectives on the complex world in which we live.

When asked to reflect on their title and curatorial approach, the students responded: It's more than a divide in colour.

Curated by Bailie, Elene, Ibtisam, Jamieson, Mehran, Naima, Raquel, Success and Yamen. Supported by Annis Harrison, Freya Kehoe, Guillaume Tran from Haverstock School and Antonia Blocker, Senior Curator: Performance & Engagement.

Now in its thirteenth year, Testing Ground for Art and Education is our annual programme focussing on professional development opportunities for early career artists and curators. This year, through a collaboration with Haverstock School in Camden, Testing Ground had a focus on young artists still in compulsory education, creating a hands-on opportunity to examine potential career paths in the arts. The programme gave an opportunity for A-Level Art Students to experience curating their own exhibition first-hand, from proposal to installation via condition checking and communications. They met with all the team members at the Collection, and learnt about the roles necessary to stage an art exhibition.
