Born in Rotterdam in 1978, Dutch artist and ex-model Amie Dicke’s work Isabelli takes centre stage at Tramshed. In this dark satire, using images of fashion and female beauty, Dicke offers a profound, existential exploration of the self even more at odds with the ethos of fashion than any explicit rejection of the beauty industry.
It was the cut-out works, such as those on show at Tramshed which initially brought Dicke critical attention, these are customised pages from fashion magazines and poster-sized ads that she spliced and carved with scalpels, slicing into the models’ features and their clothes. Leaving only their hair and upper-lips intact she creates a network of Gothic designs from slender strips of paper. Although they appear violent, these carefully and skilfully produced interventions were driven by Dicke’s sincere love for fashion.
Dicke has had solo exhibitions at EENWERK in Amsterdam and GEM Museum of Contemporary Art in The Hague and been included in group exhibitions at Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem, CentrePasquArt: Kunsthaus Centre d'Art in Biel, Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and London’s Tate Modern to name but a few. This work has been exhibited at GEM and Tate Modern.
