About

How can identity politics and concepts of self be performed, expressed and negotiated by contemporary art? Join us for a discussion with artists David Blandy and Harold Offeh focussing on some of the key questions explored in current exhibition One & Other. Work featured in the group show, including David Blandy's The White & Black Minstrel Show, 2007, will provide a framework for discussions surrounding the adoption and distribution of multiple personae in our public lives, through our bodies, on social media platforms and beyond.

David Blandy has established his terrain through a series of investigations into the cultural forces that influence him, ranging from his love of hip hop and soul, to computer games and manga. His works slip between performance and video, reality and construct, using references sampled from the disparate sources that provide his sense of self. He has recently shown works and projects at Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, Finland; Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire; Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool; and Breese Little, London, among many others.

Harold Offeh was born in Accra, Ghana in 1977 and grew up in London. He is interested in the space created by the inhabiting or embodying of history. His work encompasses performance, social practice, video and photography, often using humour as a means to confront the viewer with aspects of contemporary culture and history. He studied at the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, London. He is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Beckett University in Leeds. His work has recently been included in exhibitions and projects at Abrons Arts Center, New York; MIMA, Middlesbrough; Tate Britain, London; Site Gallery, Sheffield; and the Studio Museum Harlem, New York.
