Freezing New York

21 December 2017

I arrive back from Miami to New York and I’m immediately immersed into NYC life

Freezing New York
First stop, the studio of Camille Henrot. She gave the Artemis group, lead by Lisa Phillips from New Museum, a wonderful tour of her studio and a lecture on her show at Museum Moderne
Freezing New York
On the way back we checked out the magnificent Urs Fischer sculpture of pop star Katy Perry, visitors can add their own designs in modelling clay

I went with my friend Jill Bernstein to see ‘Art and China after 1989: Theatre of the World’ at Guggenheim, I was quite perplexed by this show. I had only an hour which was too short of a time to unravel the history. I will visit this show again when it tours to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. We very much enjoyed this 1995 work by Li Yongbin

At last I managed to visit Jeffrey Deitch's Kenny Scharf show and it was a pleasure to be reunited with his TVs again. The last time I saw these works was a historical moment as I stood in his old studio soon to be evacuated after many years
Freezing New York
I had time to visit Jane Bustin's elegant show at Jane Lombard Gallery with my friend Peter Fleissig. My recommendation for cold weather in NYC is to wear a pink hat, reason being is everyone and I mean everyone smiles and says ‘hello’! (or are they laughing at me? Hmmm, not sure)
Freezing New York
A question of art or non-art came to my attention with the work of Lewis Stein at Essex Street

Christmas cheer was all over the internet, my favourite was our home grown Daata Editions tree!
Freezing New York
It might have been freezing cold outside however the galleries were nice and warm. At Simone Subal one of my favourite ceramicists Jesse Wine greeted me with the wonderful show of his life in America starting with his dad’s tiny house which can be seen in the background
Freezing New York
Over at James Fuentes Gallery I enjoyed viewing the energetic narrated works in Joseph Geagan’s show ‘Unique New York (Garbaggio Park)’. The gallery was full of sculptures and paintings
Freezing New York
I loved the work of Chemi Rosado-Seijo a Puerto Rican artist who featured in the group show ‘Inside The Nest’ at Simon Preston Gallery. Tifzab is getting ready to co-curate a new performance this January with Klaus Bisenbach in Puerto Rico
Freezing New York
Derek Eller Gallery was showing the work of sculptor Michelle Segre. The work looked like drawings suspended in the air, perhaps a precursor to the Virtual Reality’s Tilt Brush
Freezing New York
A quick stop off at 601Artspace to view the group show ‘Other Hours’ featuring the work of Gülşah Mursaloğlu, somebody to keep an eye on
Freezing New York
The highlight of my day was to see Michael Landy's brilliant works at Sperone Westwater

This show is a must see – current and so important! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am looking forward to what January brings in my life, there is never one dull day as there is so much to see and do, however it can be a bit overwhelming so now it is time for a holiday!
