FIAC 2018: Part One

1 November 2018

Before visiting Paris I spent some time in Israel where I was delighted to see some interesting art

FIAC 2018: Part One
In the beautiful old town of Jaffa I visited Shelia Hick’s lovely installation ‘Migdalor’ at Magasin III

Founder David Neuman and Amy Simon standing proud in front of the mega installation. Moments later some of the local kids ran in and nestled themselves amongst the soft wool, with a single dive and swoop they came up for air and exited

Next stop, Paris for FIAC Art Fair! We had an amazing experience with more time than usual to go and explore. The late summer weather was beautiful - warm and inviting. Our first stop was to visit Simon Fujiwara’s solo show ‘Revolution’ at Lafayette Anticipations. His google simulator, ‘Empathy I’, was a collaboration with a company that designs theme park rides for Disney World

We were in awe and enjoyed the hyperreal sensation, realising we were a drone being released into the world and the World Wide Web. The highlight of his ‘Revolution’ was filming images of a waxwork figure of Anne Frank using a Bolt camera robot, he is comparing the cold robotic world to the way human beings observe each other through the camera’s eye - perhaps not much of a difference

It was a weird and wonderful experience

Simon’s work was full of surprises and parody. ‘The Happy Museum’ was developed with his brother who is a happiness economist. There were some very strange displays from ageing spray dyes…

Then it was off to see Albert Oehlen’s new work called ‘Sexe, Religion, Politique’. Bright egg yolk yellow paintings on aluminum sheets employing, as usual, different rules and constraints to yield new results. His paintings were shown in unison at Galerie Max Hetzler and Gagosian. All this art before the fair even opens!
